For generations, the Marion County Fair has welcomed families to celebrate the county’s agricultural heritage. From pie baking and livestock shows to harness racing, truck pulls, and favorite fair foods, the fair has long been a place where traditions are shared and new memories are made. While the attractions have evolved, the fair continues to honor the agricultural roots that helped build Marion County.
Those same roots gave rise to the Wyandot Popcorn Company—today known as Wyandot, Inc.—whose entrepreneurial spirit earned Marion the nickname “The Popcorn Capital of the World.” What began as a family business grew into an international enterprise, shipping popcorn around the globe while placing Marion on the map. Today, the Wyandot Popcorn Museum preserves that remarkable legacy and celebrates the Brown family’s lasting contribution to the community.
The spirit of craftsmanship is evidenced through the work of Todd Goings and his team at Carousels and Carvings. By restoring historic wooden carousels and creating new ones, they are preserving a uniquely American folk art for future generations. Their newest carousel, created for the Ohio State Fair, has already been recognized as a centerpiece where families will gather to create memories for years to come—a fitting tribute to a craftsman whose work brings joy to people of all ages.
That spirit of gathering comes full circle with the Marion Popcorn Festival. What began in 1981 as a celebration of Marion’s popcorn heritage has grown into one of Ohio’s premier community festivals. Each September, neighbors reconnect over favorite festival foods, families line the streets for the Popcorn Parade, local performers share the spotlight with nationally recognized entertainers, and visitors experience the hospitality that has become part of Marion’s identity.
As America commemorates its 250th anniversary, August’s stories remind us that Marion’s history is not simply found in historic buildings or museum exhibits. It lives in the traditions we continue, the craftsmanship we preserve, the businesses that shaped our community, and the celebrations that bring us together year after year.
