Time: 5:30–7 pm

Description: Explore Marion’s monuments and learn how to “read a memorial” by examining symbols, size, color, placement, materials, inscriptions, and other details. The first session will meet at Marion Veterans Park for an outdoor discussion of a variety of monuments, so participants should wear shoes and clothing appropriate for walking and the weather. The second session will explore Place Studies and Memorial Culture, including how human-built environments shape responses to local history and national events through the monuments communities build and preserve. Each 1.5-hour course is led by Sue Oakes, recently retired from The Ohio State University at Marion after more than four decades of teaching, whose research interests include Place Studies and Memorial Culture. This is an ALL Adult Learning class presented by the Marion Public Library. Registration and payment are required; stop by the Marion Public Library’s main desk for more information.
