Buckeye Talks on Tap featuring Carousel Carver and Restorationist Todd Goings at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen

The Ohio State University at Marion lecture series, Buckeye Talks on Tap, welcomes Marion, Ohio master carousel carver and restorationist Todd Goings on Tuesday, May 13, 5:30 p.m. for a lecture entitled “The Art of Carousel Restoration.” Goings, a National Endowment of the Arts Heritage Fellow and founder of Carousel and Carvings, will share his 35 years’ experience in keeping the art of American carved wooden carousels alive.
According to Carousel and Carvings’ website, the company is the nation’s only manufacturer of carousels, offering in-house services to build and restore complete carousels. “Built in a handful of master artisan workshops from the 1880s to the 1930s, wooden carousels are participatory folk-art environments that set whimsical carved animals to music and movement in custom-built mechanical frames,” the company shared. Of America’s several thousand original wooden carousels, just 150 remain. Goings has worked on many of them and, along the way, has revived the American carousel workshop for a new century.
Buckeye Talks on Tap are held the second Tuesday of each month at Bucci’s Italian Scratch Kitchen, on The Dock, at 320 W. Center St., Marion, Ohio. Buckeye Talks on Tap is patterned after the successful international phenomenon Science Cafe that features engaging conversation in casual environments like pubs, restaurants, and cafes between academic/scientific experts and the community on topics of interest to us all.
Attendees are encouraged to eat, drink, and relax during the lecture portion of the evening. Doors open for the event at 5 p.m., allowing time for attendees to place any food or drink orders. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m., and a question-and-answer open discussion begins at 6 p.m. Those attending May’s event will be entered to win a door prize provided by Marcie DeWitt from Anchor and Away Travel. Have dinner, a drink, and join this lively, casual presentation/discussion.
