Summer Reading Club 2018: Rock Your Bangle @ Marion Public Library

Summer Reading Club features incentives for kids who keep track of their reading over the summer, with prizes earned when they hit certain reading milestones.  Thousands of reading hours have been logged in each previous summer and community partnerships are a huge reason why the program is so successful.  Many local businesses contribute by donating coupons and freebies that serve as prizes for successful readers.

Are you interested in making a bangle? Some music from The Bangles may actually make an appearance as inspiration! Teens will be able to decorate their own bangle to take home, using a variety of decorating techniques including mod podging magazines, stick-on gems, and markers. If you are a teen or tween that enjoys crafting and wants to rock your own bangle, you’ll want to be here!

Summer Reading Club 2018: Movement & Dance Storytime Fridays @ Marion Public Library

Each Friday during Summer Reading Club, we’ll be celebrating the different ways Libraries Rock with a special movement and dance storytime for all ages. Get ready for your little ones to move to the beat and have a blast, without realizing they’re also supporting literacy! Learn tips and tricks to continue the fun at home every day!

Did you know that the movements and motions kids practice when they dance will also help with reading and writing later? When kids are jumping and dancing, their brains are practicing the coordination needed later to turn pages, write, and read.

Harding Symposium @ The Ohio State University at Marion

Each year, the Symposium revolves around a new theme which leads to in-depth analysis and research by authors, historians, researchers and experts on the Harding Era and related areas of interest.

A reception with entertainment on Friday night puts the weekend’s events in motion. The annual Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Harding Memorial presidential grave site takes place Saturday morning before two or three workshop sessions in the afternoon. A gala dinner with keynote speaker culminates the event on Saturday night.

The life and legacy of President Warren G. Harding will be celebrated during an annual wreath laying ceremony at his memorial site. Attending the event in honor of the nation’s 29th president will be members of the Harding family, members of the local community and history enthusiasts from throughout the greater area. This annual event is free and open to the public. A brigadier general leads the ceremony and places the official wreath. Event occurs rain or shine.

Summer Reading Club 2018: After Hours 80s Dance Party @ Marion Public Library

Summer Reading Club features incentives for kids who keep track of their reading over the summer, with prizes earned when they hit certain reading milestones.  Thousands of reading hours have been logged in each previous summer and community partnerships are a huge reason why the program is so successful.  Many local businesses contribute by donating coupons and freebies that serve as prizes for successful readers.

Celebrate summer in style, break out your neon colored clothes, ripped jeans, Converses, and come dance in style. 80s music is on the menu, along with pizza, and glow in the dark accessories will be at your disposal. Teens and tweens (ages 10 and up) can come to the library after hours and enjoy an 80s themed dance party. If you enjoy dancing, or just want to experience the library after hours and grab some pizza, come join us!

Summer Concert Series @ Erickson Pavilion: McKinley Pavilion

The 2018 Summer Concert Series will be at the Erickson Pavilion in McKinley Park throughout the summer. Bring a lawn chair, sit back, and enjoy the sounds of music in the park.

This concert will feature The Geeze Cats.

All concerts, unless rained out, will be taking place every Sunday at 7 p.m. through August 12th. Concerts are free.

Teens will enjoy music from across the decades and try their hand at a different style of art each week. Rock out, with art! If you enjoy rock music and making art, you will definitely want to stop by!

Summer Reading Club 2018: Wednesdays Creative Writing for Teens & Adults @ Marion Public Library

This program is for anyone who is interested in creative writing and artistic expression. Whether you are an experienced writer, or a novice just starting out, you have a story to tell! And this program will help you find your voice to do just that. We will explore journaling, poetry, and novel writing, as well as other forms of writing, in inspiring, exciting ways. Participants will create a writer’s notebook that will help them tap into their creativity far beyond the duration of this program. An opportunity to become a part of a supportive writer’s community to share your writing is also a focus of this program.

AKC Dog Show @ Veterans Memorial Coliseum
Jul 27 – Jul 30 all-day

The Dan Emmett Kennel Club is July 27-28. The Marion, Ohio Kennel Club will be held July 29-30. See dogs of all breeds compete as their owners parade them around the arena. There will be judging of each breed with trophies given at the end of the show.
